Bandol combines two things that southern France does particularly well: the Mediterranean coast and wine. The town lies west of Toulon and makes an easy excursion whether you are interested in beaches, harbour life or the vineyards behind the coast.
In the centre, the waterfront is lined with boats, restaurants and cafés. It is pleasant without requiring much planning: walk the harbour, stop for lunch and decide whether the afternoon belongs to the beach or something further inland.
Bandol wine
The Bandol appellation is one of Provence’s best-known wine regions. Rosé may be the colour most visitors associate with Provence, but Bandol is also particularly respected for structured red wines, traditionally based heavily on Mourvèdre.
Visiting wineries is easier with some advance planning, especially if you do not have a car. If you are driving, remember that wine tasting and driving require an obvious degree of restraint.
An easy coastal escape
Train connections make central Bandol straightforward from Toulon, which is one reason I like it as a day-trip option. You can enjoy the town without needing to organise a complicated road journey.
Come for the coast, add the wine if it interests you and avoid trying to fit every surrounding vineyard into one afternoon. Bandol is at its best when the pace stays Mediterranean.
