Plan your journey to Toulon and discover the easiest ways to explore the city and the beautiful Mediterranean coastline.
Toulon is located on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, approximately 65 kilometres east of Marseille.
The city is relatively easy to reach by train, car or plane, making it a convenient destination for a weekend getaway or a longer holiday in Provence.
Once you arrive, you will find that the historic centre is pleasant to explore on foot, while public transportation connects the city with its beaches and surrounding communities.
Flying to Toulon
Toulon–Hyères Airport is located approximately 20 kilometres east of the city centre.
The airport offers a selection of domestic and seasonal flight connections, although services vary throughout the year.
For international visitors, Marseille Provence Airport is another option, offering a wider selection of flight connections.
From Marseille Airport, you can continue to Toulon by public transportation or rental car.
Travelling by Train
Travelling by train is one of the most convenient ways to reach Toulon.
The city has rail connections with Marseille, Nice, Paris and other French destinations.
High-speed TGV services connect Toulon with Paris, while regional TER trains provide connections along the Mediterranean coast.
Toulon railway station is located close to the city centre, making it easy to reach many hotels and attractions.
Getting Around Toulon
Toulon’s public transportation network, operated under the Réseau Mistral brand, includes buses and passenger boats connecting different parts of the metropolitan area.
Local buses provide access to the Mourillon beaches and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Passenger boat services across the harbour offer a pleasant alternative for travelling to nearby coastal communities.
Exploring on Foot
Toulon’s historic centre is relatively compact and enjoyable to explore on foot.
Many restaurants, shops, markets and cultural attractions are located within walking distance of one another.
However, some coastal destinations and attractions outside the centre require additional transportation.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly visiting central Toulon and the Mourillon beaches, you can manage without a rental car.
However, a car can be useful if you want to explore smaller coastal communities, scenic countryside and more remote beaches.
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Toulon. This gives you enough time to discover the old town, enjoy the beaches and experience the beautiful Mediterranean surroundings.
