Explore the charming streets of Toulon’s Old Town, where colourful Provençal buildings, lively markets and beautiful historic squares create an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere.
Toulon’s Old Town, known locally as Le Vieux Toulon, is one of the most enjoyable areas to explore during a visit to this Mediterranean port city.
Located just a short walk from the harbour, the historic centre offers a fascinating mixture of narrow pedestrian streets, traditional shops, beautiful architecture and welcoming cafés.
Unlike some of the more tourist-oriented destinations along the French Riviera, Toulon’s Old Town retains a relaxed, everyday atmosphere that makes it particularly enjoyable to discover on foot.
Explore the Historic Streets
Start your visit at Place de la Liberté, one of Toulon’s most impressive squares, before continuing towards the historic centre.
As you wander through the narrow streets, you will discover colourful façades, traditional shutters, small boutiques and attractive squares.
Look out for the beautiful fountains scattered throughout the neighbourhood, including the historic Fontaine des Trois Dauphins at Place Puget.
The nearby Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-de-la-Seds is another interesting landmark worth visiting.
Visit the Cours Lafayette Market
One of the highlights of Toulon’s Old Town is the traditional Provençal market along Cours Lafayette.
Here, local vendors sell fresh vegetables, seasonal fruit, flowers, olives and regional specialities.
The market is a wonderful place to experience everyday life in Toulon and discover the flavours of Provence.
Visit in the morning when the stalls are open and the surrounding streets are full of activity.
Enjoy the Mediterranean Atmosphere
After exploring the market, find a small café or restaurant and enjoy a relaxed lunch.
Try traditional Provençal dishes or simply order a coffee and watch the world go by.
From the Old Town, you can easily continue towards Toulon’s harbour, where fishing boats, ferries and waterfront restaurants create a lively maritime atmosphere.
My tip: Visit the Old Town in the morning, explore the Cours Lafayette market and finish with lunch near the harbour. Allow yourself time to wander through the smaller streets rather than following only the main shopping routes.
