La Seyne-sur-Mer

La Seyne-sur-Mer sits across the rade from Toulon, making it one of the most natural excursions from the city. Its history is closely connected with shipbuilding and the harbour, but the wider area also includes beaches and Mediterranean coastline.

One of the pleasures of the trip is the journey itself. Maritime public transport can make crossing the harbour part of the experience rather than simply a way of getting from A to B.

A shipbuilding past

La Seyne was once dominated by major shipyards. Although that industrial era has changed dramatically, traces of the maritime past remain around the waterfront and help explain the relationship between communities around the Rade de Toulon.

Walk around the harbour area before deciding whether to continue towards the coast.

Continue to the beaches

The wider commune includes attractive seaside areas, with Les Sablettes among the best known. This makes it possible to combine a little local history with a beach afternoon.

I would not approach La Seyne expecting a miniature version of central Toulon. Its appeal is different: the harbour crossing, maritime heritage and access to the western side of the rade.

For visitors staying several days in Toulon, it is an easy way to broaden the trip without travelling far at all.
